The COOP currently supports two LGR programs. Both programs offer SAT math and verbal coaching for students at Proctor High School, part of the Utica City School District. On Saturdays, seven Hamilton coaches work with Proctor's Young Scholars program. Mondays and Tuesdays 13 other Hamilton coaches work with students at the Underground Cafe, a local hangout for Proctor students. In addition to offering coaching in SAT math and verbal skills, Hamilton students also help guide Proctor students through the college application process, and offer advice and anecdotes on everything from financial aid forms to extra-curricular activities in college.
Guatemalan children deserve better. Young newly literate women in Guatemala are giving them that opportunity, opening preschools in their homes. Founded by Guatemalan women they have over 75 classrooms, but thousands more are needed. Fortunately, the program is easily replicable with an investment of $200 per child per year compared with $10,000 in a developed county like the USA

The Princeton program is currently only active in the spring, and volunteers are encouraged to apply through the website. Volunteers are asked to commit to one evening a week to teach either SAT Verbal or Math to their students. Lesson plans will be provided.
This program offers a rich and supportive learning environment for toddlers. Social, emotional, physical and cognitive growth is fostered through a balanced, developmentally based program. Participants are involved in circle time, group activities including songs playing instruments, parachute play, puppets, bubbles and group games.

Let's Get Ready provides high school students from historically underrepresented communities with free SAT preparation, admissions counseling and other support services needed to gain admission to and graduate from college. Services are provided by volunteer college students who also serve as role models and mentors. LGR was founded in 1998 by a Harvard undergraduate. Since then, Let's Get Ready has served more than 25,000 high school students from historically underrepresented communities with the mentoring power of 9,000 trained volunteer college Coaches. In partnerships with colleges, high schools and community organizations, programs stretch from Maine to Pennsylvania.
The organization reports average SAT score increases of 115 points for its participants, more than 92 percent of whom enroll in college after high school. Students of the program get more than just guidance in passing the test, however, as their mentors offer advice about the college application and admission process, financial aid and college life.
Michigan Women Forward is seeking applicants to attend a free eight-week training program in which participating small business owners will receive financial tools adapted for their industry. After completion of the financial training, each participant will receive a complimentary laptop with QuickBooks, QuickBooks training and customer mapping training. In addition to the training sessions each entrepreneur will also receive 12 hours of one-on-one accounting services.
Each client will also receive 12 hours of one-on-one accounting services, a free laptop with QuickBooks and an additional 3 weeks of QuickBooks training. The program will also include a workshop on marketing, digital communications, maintaining a website, and using digital tools to communicate with your customer.
Scarsdale residents Jordan Elkins, Griffin Flagg, Ben Fife, Ian Rabin, and David Wiesenfeld volunteered their time once a week as coaches and mentors in Let's Get Ready's White Plains summer program, while Matthew Yaspan, Mallory Minster, John Mermelstein and Jessica Somekh volunteered for the organization's Port Chester program .
Every summer since 2000, roughly 300 low-income high school students have been gathering twice a week at locations in communities throughout Westchester and Southern Connecticut to receive free SAT instruction and college admissions counseling. A free program with roots in Westchester County, Let's Get Ready (www.letsgetready.org) provides students with 30 hours of intensive instruction on math, critical reading, and writing skills, guides them through the college application process and supports them through college.
Let's Get Ready is the most cost-effective and replicable SAT and college prep program available to low-income high school students today. The organization is able to offer its program at no cost to its participants because college students who are recruited and trained by the organization serve as the tutors and coaches in the program. These collegiate volunteers serve as mentors and provide the inspiration and confidence that high school students need to succeed. And it is working! Participants increase their scores on average by 110 points and 93% of them are admitted to and attend college each year.
Let's Get Ready programs are built upon collaborations with community organizations and local high schools. Summer sessions in Stamford, Greenwich and Westchester County began in June and were staffed by college student recruits who returned home to Connecticut and Westchester for the summer. Students were divided into groups based on their performance on the test. They were given three diagnostic SAT tests for practice prior to taking the exam to gauge their progress and also received 15 hours of comprehensive information and guidance regarding college selection, applications, financial aid and scholarships.
Let's Get Ready operates programs in partnership with 34 prestigious colleges and universities in the Northeast, in the fall and spring, and with many communities between New Jersey and Maine over the summer.
At the time, the LAPD had two police stations in the entire city that offered licensing, which is really more of a registration for the bicycle than any sort of license that requires skill or knowledge of traffic laws, but was still citing bicycle riders for not having license stickers on their bicycles. The fines were outrageous, sometimes higher than the cost of the bicycle being cited, and were in violation of a state law that allows cities to run bicycle licensing programs.
After a series of public hearings held by the City Council Transportation Committee, initially chaired by Wendy Greuel but later by Bill Rosendahl, the LAPD recommended the suspension of the program. The City Council complied, although there were still the occasional ticket issued by clueless officers.
California caps both the fine that cities can collect for unlicensed bicycles in a mandatory program and the amount that a city can charge for a license. The latter charge is $4, which means that it would be nigh impossible for a city to make money on such a program.
The biggest problem with the licensing program was that it was mandatory, meaning that it became a weapon for officers to harass cyclists with whom they had another issue. In Los Angeles, the target was often participants in groups rides, especially C.R.A.N.K. Mob or Critical Mass. In other cities, the license program was used as an excuse to profile minority cyclists.
Most tellingly, when I reached out to a bicycle advocate in Portland about whether or not their city had a licensing program, she responded that no city has ever had a successful mandatory program and recommended mocking instead of analyzation.
While advocates are split on the value of a licensing program, there is universal agreement that it should be an optional way for the city to help cyclists in a case of emergency. Requiring millions of bicycles to be registered will create a new bureaucracy, and another barrier to bicycling in a city that is still struggling to shake its reputation as the Car-Culture Capital of America.
The cheers reflected the hopes and dreams for better futures that many of these families have pinned to getting a college education. It's why the 46 students who graduated from the free program spent their summers studying and taking practice tests; learning techniques on how to improve their chances of a better score and touring colleges and meeting with recruiters.
She said wealthier families have been able to pay for costly test-preparation courses, leaving the less affluent behind. So LGR provides its program for free, relying on college students to volunteer.
The program doesn't end with the graduation ceremony. The students will be given a refresher before they take the test in October. Novick also said LGR provides the students help in applying to schools and for financial aid. She said the organization then provides support for students when they enter college.
While all the students who finished the program were given certificates, several were given special awards, including two David Buitrago Awards to students who exemplify the spirit of the organization.
