King of the African savannah: seeing a pride of lions in their own habitat will leave you with an indelible memory. Lions have an enchanting power around them and have served as the symbol of Africa for millennia. And did you know lions are very social? They are the only wild cats that live in a pride. In a group, females hunt more than the males, but most will happily scavenge if they get the chance. Timbavati Game Reserve is known for its multitude of lions, so get your camera ready.
The cats are out and about in the Timbavati

Timbavati has a high concentration of wildlife and is known for the predators, especially the cats. Although the Timbavati is a private reserve and is a more exclusive safari experience, it forms part of the Greater Kruger Park with its borders being mainly un-fenced with the national park.Late afternoon and into the evenings is a great time to spot wildlife, after which you will make your way to the lodge for supper and an opportunity to have a relaxed evening. Dinner and overnight at Camp/Lodge.
Big cats are easy to spot, but rhino is more hit-and-miss. African wild dogs are regular visitors to the property. The white lions are very rare, but some lighter colored lions carrying the gene might be spotted.
From here, Federal Air flies twice daily to Timbavati. Alternatively, you can take a connecting flight from Johannesburg to Hoedspruit Airport (HDS). The reserve is only about 15km/9mi from the airport, which makes a transfer to the reserve very easy.
The other famous fact about the Timbavati is its association with the white lions, known as the 'white lions of Timbavati'. Timbavati in ancient Sangaan means 'the place where something sacred came down to earth from the heavens' and refers to these genetically rare specimens that are not albino lions but are actually listed as a sub species of lion.

Returning to Kings Camp after an absence of several years, it was reassuring not to have to work too hard to remember the first time. Other than a few small changes (a new spa area, new decking, more outdoor spaces) it had remained essentially the same. A timeless classic where all your African safari expectations are met and exceeded. The near palatial rooms with mosquito net enclosed king bed, an inviting clawfoot bathtub, inside and outside shower and plunge pool (in the honeymoon suites), will wow just about anybody.
The two game drives from Kings Camp with my guide Remember were fun and memorable. Remember is a caring, careful and highly experienced guide who knows the area intimately and takes his time to impart some interesting facts and observations about the various animals, birds, plants, and trees seen.
History was made recently when four lions were released into Mkhuze Game Reserve after a long absence of 44 years. These big cats (a male and two females) are the first of a total of eight destined for the Mkhuze section of the iSimangaliso Wetland Park. They were trans-located from Tembe Elephant Park (www.tembe.co.za) by the iSimangaliso Wetland Park Authority and its conservation partner, Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife. A fantastic conservation victory on the #ZuluRoute in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa - restoring this beautiful game reserve to "Big 5" status!History was made in December 2013
And of course, she saw a snake. The day before the solo started, each participant took a walk to tune in to what drew their attention in the natural world and then to their own responses to it, and hence gain insight about their inner journey. The snake was curled in some rocks. It regarded Kara, then slithered away. Although she was frightened, she was also intrigued. Throughout her solo, she worked with the mystery of snake. She built a long snake of stones and decorated it with sand and pebbles. She drew a mock snakebite on her leg, which she colored with iodine from her first aid kit, and reflected on what she needed to know about being sharper and more direct in her life. She considered the relationship between poison and self-protection. Creating a snake dance, she took on the beauty of what she was afraid of. After the journey, when she got back home, she began to fulfill her lifelong yearning to paint by making water colors of mythical snakes.
Now our Xhosa guide, Giyani, flipped on the spotlight. Each night, as we drove back to the lodge, he would hold this large light and flick it back and forth, up and down in the darkness on either side of the track we bumped over, and miraculously he would illuminate such rarities as a giant slug or a feral cat. Now what we saw in the beam was the old lion. He was about twenty yards in front of us, and he was walking across the ground that the younger pride had occupied only half an hour earlier.
Suppose we distinguish between phenomena and the stories we tell about the phenomena.9 Then we can ask: When I go home today, do I see my spouse or parent as phenomena-ever-able-to-surprise-me or do I see that spouse or parent as covered over with stories so I do not have to see anew and listen anew and respect anew and love anew? When I go to the place where I work or volunteer, do I see my co-workers as phenomena-ever-able-to-surprise-me or do I see them as storied over? How do we keep the music playing? How do we make it last? Is not each day a great gift of beginning anew, always anew? 2ff7e9595c
